Application Guidelines

Please read the health hazard information before commencement.

Because of the oil's ability to allow the timber to breathe and release vapour it can be applied directly to new timber without waiting months as is recommended for many synthetic products.

Most complaints involve inadequate mixing and over-application.

The oxides, which play a primary role in the UV protection settle to the bottom of the container and need to be evenly re-dispersed. For 10 and 20 litre pails it is recommended to pour into another pail ensuring that the bottom inch or so is well and truly whisked before mixing in. For smaller tins brush out the bottom and mix in. This operation only takes minutes and can save hours by extending the life of the oil.

Continue to gently stir during the application procedure.

The oil can be applied by cloth, brush, spray or lambswool pad. Only apply sufficient oil which can be absorbed by the host timber. Tung oil absorbs oxygen and expands therefore it is imperative it is not left redundant on the surface.

For decking, the lambswool pad is ideal because of speed of application and the control as to the amount of oil applied. In tangent with a roller tray one can avoid 'sloshing' the oil. Furthermore, use a semi-dry pad to go over the surface after about 20 minutes of the main application, to rub in/ rub off any excess oil which may have accumulated.

Application by spray or brush is recommended for weatherboard and fencing.

If furniture is oiled with a brush it is advisable to rub in with a lint free cloth.

Do not apply oil if rain is expected within 4 hours or if the surface temperature of the timber / ambient temperature is above 30°.

To remove scuff marks and scratches, simply apply a little oil onto a cloth and wipe the affected area.

We recommend using a little oil often rather than applying a lot of oil infrequently. Hardwoods and in particularly our indigenous eucalyptus species are extremely dense and cannot absorb lots of oil and unless extremely aged and dry, 2 coats is sufficient at any one time.

Re-coating can be carried out as required but generally between 6 months and 2 years depending primarily on how much exposure to sunlight and personal preferences.

What the DECK oiled timber should never have to be sanded back no matter how neglected.
